Just a reminder they’re showing this again on BBC4, starting tonight at 10pm. Really good series if anyone missed it the first time around.
The six episodes are: Deptford High Street, Camberwell Grove, Caledonian Road, Portland Road, Reverdy Road, Arnold Circus.

The program traces the history of the street right back to the Old Nich that preceded it through its various residents including the Jews & Bengalis up to the current Shoeditch hipsters.
Worth a watch if you have a connection to it.

I had an aunt who lived on the estate in the 1960's. From my memory the place was a tip, and close to being the slums that it was built to replace (I think it was called the 'Old Nich').
She moved from their to Limehouse, which although still rough was a mile better than the flats in the Boundary estate, which I would never have thought of as a lovely old east end street. My old street in Mile End, near Mile End station was a real, old fashioned proper east end street with forever open doors, kids playing football in the street, few cars and nobody having much money, but generally all good decent people.
Arnold Circus featured in the other BBC series about the Victorian slums, which I thought was much better, as it featured the types of places, work and living conditions that my ancestors lived in back in the day.

First council estate and they threw out the chavs. ... it was like that with council housing everywhere until some time in the 60s. People had to look after their gaff or they'd be slung out.

Just watched the Reverdy Rd one and thought it ranked up with the Deptford High St one as the best of the series mainly because of the fact that for the first 50 minutes it didn't follow the trend of everyone selling out to rich bastard outsiders ! Obviously as soon as the council is short of money the houses are put up for sale and some chinless wonder/ property developing cunt comes in and destroys the area ! It confirmed what I have thought for many years that working class Londoners are far more interesting and intelligent than how they are portrayed by the media or when compared with the new breed middle class. The series has illustrated to me what a national disgrace our housing policy is ie the culling of working class people from the areas they grew up in to be replaced with those having no connection with these areas and who will probably never even live in those houses but just use them as money generators !

I was back in the UK last week and feeling poorly so was in bed and all the Uk TV I was was crap..unless you like Antiques, Cooking shows, Hospitial soaps..;until this came on. Breath of fresh air.

There was a second series in 2014 which was SCOTTISH and covered a street in each of Glasgow, Edinburgh & Aberdeen.
Have seen something that the film company are currently researching a series on the streets of the North of England.

Wish they would make more of them on other London streets.
I live just off Camberwell Grove and to think it could all have been torn down for some shitty housing that wouldnt last 50 years.
That Reverdy Rd house going for £317,000 or whatever! What would it be now? £750k or something? Crazy.

The sort of social history stuff that the BBC should be doing.
Made in 2012 and every one has a bit of a theme of 'normal people' being priced out which has obviously got even worse.
Typically Bermondsey that the statue of Dr Salter has been nicked and melted down.

Saw a couple of these the first time round. Really good, interesting series. Kind of thing lacking on television these days.
BBC 4 is a cracking channel.

90% of BBC programmes are absolute shit, stuff like this and Attenborough and the odd drama are the exception nowadays

They're doing the Boundary Estate next week, the first council housing in the world on the site of the Old Nichol slum between Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. My mum was born and raised on that estate so will definitely tune in for that.

No other channel could even dream of being capable of making a programme with such detail and well researched skill as this one...and that includes Channel 4
My favourite was the Deptford episode too...They were also going to completed level Camberwell Grove and leave it just like Deptford but they were stopped by local residents uniting together.
The programme really stuck it to the Deptford councillor and main town planner at the time - Ted I think his name was - irony is exactly the same thing is now happening all over again - largely in the same places and driven by New Labour types who are all middle class conservatives. Just like the Deptford chap.

Loved the Portland Road one. Bit like my gaff I bought in 98 in Kensington. Now its all rich people like me and we got all the scum , B&Bs and aussies out. My place is worth a fortune for a 2 bed flat.
